Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the difference between plaster powder and gypsum powder for DIY casting?
A: Plaster powder and gypsum powder are very closely related — both are calcium sulfate-based materials used for casting and moulding. This high-density white plaster/gypsum powder is specially processed to offer a finer grain, stronger set, and smoother finish compared to standard craft plaster, making it ideal for detailed DIY castings and aromatherapy stone making.
Q: Can I use this plaster powder to make aromatherapy diffuser stones?
A: Absolutely! Once set and fully dried, gypsum plaster is naturally porous, which allows it to absorb essential oils and slowly release their fragrance into the air. Simply add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the finished stone and enjoy a natural, long-lasting scent diffuser. Check out our Natural Essential Oils range to find the perfect scent.
Q: How long does this plaster powder take to set and fully dry?
A: Initial setting (hardening in the mould) typically takes 20–40 minutes depending on the water-to-powder ratio and ambient temperature. Full curing and drying to maximum hardness takes approximately 24 hours. Avoid painting or applying oils until fully cured for best results.
Q: Is this plaster powder safe to use indoors?
A: Yes, when used as directed. Mix in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling the fine powder dust during mixing — we recommend wearing a basic dust mask while handling the dry powder. Once mixed and set, the material is stable and safe for indoor display and use.
Q: Which moulds work best with this casting plaster powder?
A: Silicone moulds are the most popular choice for plaster casting as they are flexible, non-stick, and allow for easy demoulding. Plastic and rubber moulds can also be used with a mould release spray. Avoid using cardboard or paper moulds as they may absorb moisture and distort the shape.
